Why surface roots come up, and what grinding does
Big maples, ash, and cottonwoods send woody lateral roots just under the surface, and as they thicken they ridge up through the lawn, crack sidewalk slabs, and lift driveway edges. It is one of the most common calls we get from established Noblesville and Carmel neighborhoods where the trees have had decades to spread.
Grinding shaves those exposed roots back to or just below grade so you can mow, walk, and edge without catching them, while the tree keeps standing. We grind only the surface runs causing the problem; we do not trench out the structural roots that keep the tree alive and anchored, and we will tell you honestly if a root is too close to the trunk to touch safely.
How a surface root grind goes
- Walk the runsWe trace which roots are causing trip hazards or hitting hardscape and mark the runs to grind.
- Call 811We call Indiana 811 for a utility locate, since surface roots often run right alongside shallow buried lines.
- Grind flushWe shave the marked roots to or just below grade with the right wheel, keeping the cuts clean and the tree intact.
- Clean & dressWe clear the grindings, dress the runs with soil where needed, and leave the lawn ready to seed over.
Specs we work to
| Spec | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | By the linear foot | A fair, measurable basis for an irregular job |
| Grind depth | Flush to just below grade | Enough to mow and walk over safely |
| Tree kept | Trunk and structural roots untouched | Surface runs only, the tree stays healthy |
| Near hardscape | Ground back from walks and driveway edges | Stops the lifting and cracking |
| Utility safety | Indiana 811 locate before every grind | Surface roots share depth with buried lines |
Where we do this
Surface root grinding is steady work under the mature canopy of Old Town Noblesville, the established streets of Carmel and Zionsville, and any Hamilton County yard where a big shade tree has started lifting the lawn or the walk. Send a photo of the runs and we will quote the linear footage.
