Why backyard stumps need a different machine
Most stump grinders are built for open front yards and curb-side trees. The moment a stump sits behind a privacy fence, a standard machine either won't fit through the gate or has to be craned and walked in, which is how lawns get rutted and fence sections end up unscrewed and leaned against the garage. In Hamilton County's older Noblesville neighborhoods and the tightly-platted subdivisions in Fishers and Carmel, that's the rule, not the exception.
Our compact, self-propelled grinder is sized specifically for that problem. It clears a standard 36-inch gate, distributes its weight to stay gentle on turf, and maneuvers in the kind of side-yard gaps where a full-size machine simply can't turn. You keep your fence, your sprinkler heads, and your grass.
How a tight-access grind goes
- Locate & protectWe call Indiana 811 for a utility locate, then lay track mats along the access route and around the work area to protect your lawn.
- Walk it inThe compact grinder rolls through the gate under its own power, no fence removal, no crane, no torn-up side yard.
- Grind below gradeWe grind the stump and the buttressing surface roots to 6–12 inches below grade, deep enough to re-sod, plant, or just forget it was ever there.
- Backfill & cleanWe backfill the void with the grindings (or haul them off), tamp it level, and blow down the patio and walks. You'd never know we were back there.
Specs we work to
| Spec | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gate clearance | Machine fits openings under 36″ | Most residential gates are 36–48″; we clear the tight ones |
| Standard grind depth | 6–12″ below grade | Enough for grass, landscaping, or replanting |
| Replant / hardscape depth | 12″+ on request | Needed before sod, a patio, or a new tree |
| Turf protection | Track mats on the access path | Spreads weight so the lawn doesn't rut |
| Utility safety | Indiana 811 locate before every grind | Buried lines run shallow in established yards |
| Backfill | Grindings + tamp, or full haul-off | Your choice, level lawn or hauled clean |
Where we do this
Tight-access backyard grinding is our most-requested job across Noblesville, the fenced subdivisions of Fishers and Carmel, the newer builds in Westfield, and around Geist. If you're not sure your gate is wide enough, send a photo with something for scale and we'll tell you straight whether we can roll in or need a panel off (we'll put it back).
